Practical Sports Ministry Development

Introduction:

The sports "scene" is a great classroom.  According to the scripture one's faith is refined by testing.  There is no better crucible than competition to find out what the individual is able to live out and not merely profess.  Using sports to work with youth or adults makes biblical theory come alive when they have to demonstrate those bible verses they are memorizing!

Sports- as a fantastic gathering and interactive phenomenon- produces its own unique harvest fields. In Mathew 9:37 where Jesus said, " The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few."  He was letting us know the relationship between farming and evangelizing.

Because the sports environment is comfortable, many people will find terrific opportunities to share their faith and activities can be arranged that will attract the unbeliever into fellowship with the believer. Sports activities will allow you to reach out and also draw in.

When the world pulls and tempts the young person who is going through those difficult teen years, a sports ministry might be the only link between them and that world.  The young person may not be relating to the sermon in church, the Sunday school teacher or even his church-going peers.  This is when a sports ministry is so important.  It can keep that person attached to Jesus so the eternal word of God can be taught and lived out.  It might allow Biblical truths to be planted. They may not bloom right away, as those seeds are planted him, and the longer the church and/or sports ministry can grow these awesome seeds, the more likely the seeds will begin to produce fruit!
